Started on first try

From too cold to full spring in a few weeks. Never had the time to get the skis on the plane…
Not a cloud in the sky today, light winds and 19 degrees (C), just irresistible. This was my first flight since November and was curious to see if Victor would wake up easily from the long hibernation…
Filled the tank with new fresh fuel, 2% mixture. I drained the excessive oil from the cylinders (where does all this oil come from?), swung the prop for 30 seconds to get fuel in the carburetors. Contact, ignition, wroooom. Started right away, like if I had been flying the same morning. That was nice.
Visited a nearby field and got 1h15 in the air. No performance measures, just getting back in the air, enjoying some pure pleasure…

  1. Hi Fred
I flew my Bingo on Sunday, Monday with quite a number of friends. Talking to Simonini, there is no way to cure this problem, but fly regularly on a few day bases than it cranks without oil deposit. The other thing what I do now, I have two set of sparkplugs which I clean home. Apart of that its a sheer joy.
I have a friend here with Victor 2 trike, he was desperate with the performance. I checked everything systematically, and re-tuned the carburettors and syncronized them. Than it was a different engine. Unfortunately, his gearbox gave up this time. He swings a 5 blader Powerfin prop with 1:3,47 gearbox. The two upper bearing fall apart. I think it was lack of lubing and changing the oil in the gearbox.
I wanted to ask you what spark plugs and gearbox oil do you use ?

  2. Hi Peter,
I’m using Yacco oils. BRX C100 85W140 for the gearbox, and MVX 500 for the 2% mixture.
    Sparkplugs are NGK BR9ES
I need to find someone to help me tune and synchronize the carburetors. I’ll be interested to see if it makes any difference.
    Regards
    Fred

    1. Hi Fred, I am sorry I just read your comments. Theres not too much to do on the carburettors to synchronize them. As I did:
      - Make sure that no loose throttle and choke cable
      - Make sure that idle screw is the same setting.
      - Make sure that they closes fully on throttle down.
      - Make sure they open both full by looking at intake at throttle on full.
Look at the choke cable and the joints they both move the same way and they not broken. This is all what you can do without any sort of instrument, and re-jetting but this alone improves a lot.
If you have very much difference on EGT and CHT on each cyl head than you need to see some aircraft mechanics but I doubt. By the time of my first comment, our friends gearbox are rebuilt and runs great. Simonini response and parts supply was fast. I am happy with that.
Theres no reason to look for any other engine.

  3. Hey there Fred, I have been reading your blog recently as I am to place an order for an engine for my Karatoo (highly modified) project within the next week and need to make my final decision. I have narrowed my choices of engine to but a few now.... Simonini being one of them. Specifically I am looking at the Victor 2 Super 110HP. Today is June 11, 2012, so I am wondering how your engine is treating you?... and looking for any input that may help my decision.

    Best regards,
    Glenn from Australia
