No, not going to Blois this year...

Cold, rain and strong winds... I will finally not go to Blois this weekend. The weather at Blois should be OK, but going there and coming back would not be nice...

  1. Hi Fred Just a little overview. I had a bad landing with some damage. While servicing the gears, I took a look at the engine. It was running about 30-40 hours on 1:33 mix and about 70 hours on 1:50 mix. Total hour by my tacho meter is 120. I opened the cyl heads and it was in need of decarb. I also replaced the carburettor rubber fixings, it was some cracks on them, but nothing serious. Reed valves are perfect and looking into the shaft and bearings and rod from the openings was also very good. Cylinder and jug walls are great, just like new. The joint cups of the two exhaust pipes was broken needed to be redone. The second cyl was leaking exhaust already. I guess low rev vibes really makes them wear out fast.
Looking at the oil deposit due to our inverse cyl and other state, I am moving to 1:60 ...1:65 Oil/Petrol mix. The oil I use is a semi-synthetic oil.
Also low rev vibration pulled out the water temp cable from the water collector.
    The rest was ok.

  2. Thank you Peter!
Excellent feedback. Sorry about your bad landing.
I have unfortunately not been able to fly for some time (but that will change soon) and my counter is still at 40 hours... I will take a close look at the joints.
I have modified the exhaust system (just changes the attachments slightly) and it appears to have fixed the leak i had.
    Regards,
    Fred

  3. Fred, I put back the Kool prop instead of Kiev prop and now I am cruising at 4300-4400 rpm with 110 km/h. 200-300 rpm lower than it used to be. Very good performance with under and around 13 lit / hour consumption . Max speed is 150 km/h with 5950 rpm. Low rev vibe is improved however there is still a range between 3500-3700 but I just simply avoid to operate in that range.
Last weekend I had a chance to try an original CH701 Stol with 80 HP 912 engine. Prop was a French Duc Swirl 3 blader. Max speed was 130 km/h with 5100 rpm, and I was not impressed at all with STOL takeoff, but descend with the 26 kg heavier engine was much higher than with my Bingo / Victor. The friend of mine bought the motor immediately after we made the test flight, we weighted it was 77 kgs with oil, coolant, exhaust, so complete.
I would not change my Victor with an 80HP rotax for sure !

  4. Hello guys! Do you think the Victor2 can be a reliable option to an Skyranger Ninja? This plane cruise at 110mph (180kmh + -), and I'm afraid that's to less drag for a two stroke engine (less drag usually means high EGT and low CHT, not good!). What you guys think about it? Other option that I have is the VW aerovee or Revmaster, but the simonini seams to be a damn good engine! Any help? Fly safe! Regards from Brazil!

  5. Hello Gabriel!
While I really dont see why a Simonini Victor 2 would not work well on a Skyranger Ninja I can obviously not make a recomendation... To me, in any situation where you could hesitate between a 582 and a 912 the Simonini should be an alternative to be investigated.
In terms of "reliability" only time can tell. I'm only at 42 hours, Peter at 120 hours (thank you Peter for your frequent posts) and I invite anyone usibg the same engine to share his or her experience on this blog. That is why I created it..

  6. Hello Fred,

I've also got an Avid flyer with Warp Drive prop up here in Finland. In one of your comments you stated the need for getting a new prop. Have you happened to measure a static thrust with your current prop. It would be interesting to compare results. I have a Hirth F30 2 stroke engine (approx 85 hp) with 1:2.6 reduction (belt).

    1. Hi Keijo - I hope you receive this message. Can you give an update on your Avid please ? I know the man who originally built her here in England ( he sold her in 2007 ) - can you post a photo of your Avid in Finland - thank you - Steve

  7. Hi Keijo!
I hope you have skis for your bird, a friend in Finland tells me they have all the snow they need already...
No, I have not measured the static thrust, but a friend just told me he have what it takes so I will probably do that in the spring when I will start hunting for a new prop. Ill let you know.
What is your regular and rapid cruising speeds?
Are you happy with the Hirth?
How many hours do you have on it?
    Regards
    Fred

    1. Unfortunately no skis since I brought her from Enland a couple of summers ago. Yes we've got plenty of snow already.

I've have just started my test flying so I'm not yet very used to her. The rapid cruise seems to settle around 90 mph IAS. I don't think Avid will cruise much faster with any engine / prop combination as the airframe has quite big drag.
In my A/C the engine seemed to run a tad hot (CHTs)which caused me headache but it seemed to be trimming issue... I have to use a few degrees flaperons down to get better cooling (and cruise). How about you?
The engine itself is powerful enough for the airframe thou a little thirsty.
Both engine and airframe has approx 600 hours on them. I have flown her only few hours by now.

Mine delivered around 150 kg static with my current WarpDrive.

You can find a picture and video clip of her via google searching with keywords youtube G-BVLW.
