Right, 3 weeks since last flight... it should normally be impossible to start without removing and cleaning excess oil from the 4 spark plugs - if normally is without a closed fuel tap...
But as I had not only installed a fuel tap right on the fire wall prior to my last flight but also closed it I had no problems starting the engine.
Or put differently even when closed the Bing carburettors leak fule and slowly flood the engine and the oil remains in the cylinder head if there is a gravity feed from the fuel tanks.
Good news Fred, I'm glad to hear this :)
ReplyDeleteI have a fuel tap at the bottom of the cabin, I always close it after flights and its somewhat better but it is still a problem .... Maybe if we try that close the tap before stopping the engine so buring off all fuels from the system... maybe. I have not tried that.
ReplyDeleteThe most effective start for me is full choke, to make sure there are enough petrol deluting the oil on the plugs , than full trhottle without choke for about 10 second, to clean that off. For the 3rd (probably longer) full choke, no throttle, it usually starts.

Peter,
ReplyDeleteIt is the same for me, I was too early to celebrate... The fuel tap reduces the problem but it is not the solution. Running dry does not help.
