Slowly getting there…

The engine is now permanently in place but nothing connected yet.  ...and I just realize that I forgot to document the simplified back plate and the moved ignition coils (see my earlier post Remodelling the engine mount and My current engine mount will not fit)... too late now...
I can already reveal that the next challenge will be the exhaust system in relation to the landing gear…

  1. Hi Fred,
Despite our daily visits to your site we find that the work is not moving fast ... Caution fall storms will not be long now!

  2. Pierre-Marie and Claire!
Nice to hear from you. I have been working harder on the plane than on the blog lately. I expect to be at the airfield Monday for a test run. Maybe I will see you then!

  4. Hi Fred,
Nice to see your progress ! Post some vids on Youtube ! I am absolutely happy with my Simonini in by ICP Bingo. Look at youtube for "Bingo with Simonini". I use 69 inch Koolprop, I also have a 71 inch Kiev prop. It cruises about 5300 rpm or below with 2 on board. The next thing youll want is an inflight adjustable prop.
Next week my little monster will be painted !

  5. Peter!
Nice videos, thanks for posting. As soon as get ready to take off I will try to post some video as well. So far it looks very promising, there is a lot of power in this engine!
How much fuel do you consume per hour at economic cruise speed with your Bingo?

  6. Fred,
Its much less than 582, usually its between 13..15 L/h. Depending on load. Around 15 is with 2 person, (friend is over 90kgs) I needed a STOL performance but currently I fly on 800 m fields and I have a fixed prop. I am painting the little beast this week, but next week I will add some more pitch to the prop, so it will not spin the engine at max 6200 rpm but below. I expect that it will result even less than that, around and below 13, as rpm will drop below 5000 for cruising. My cruising speed is currently 115-120 km/h I expect that to go over 120-125.

Anyhow you will expect the EGT between 590...620 C and CHT around 90-120 C. Coolant for me is never more than 80. C

  7. Fred,
What is the prop you have currently ?
For RPM try to get one of these Tiny-Tachs, I have that too and requires no major installation whatsoever : http://cgi.ebay.com/Tiny-Tach-Carpet-Cleaning-Engine-Tachometer-Hour-Meter-/280616296478?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item415608e01e

  8. I have been following the installation with great interest .. particularly impressed with the very neat installation of the exhaust system which seems to be quite a challenge on other Simonini installations. Is the exhaust system the standard unit now supplied with the engine or did the factory custom fabricate it for your Avid? Cannot wait for the flight reports .. peter in australia

  9. Peter,
true, the exhaust system is both the secret of the performance and a potential source of issues at installation. Simonini propose several standard models depending on how you are planning to install it. A good idea might be to contact your local retailer, or Simonini directly, and ask what they propose for you aircraft. In "worst case" maybe they can do a custom version...

  10. Fred, The rpm in flight will go up by about 100-150 vs stationary ground RPM. So if you set it around 6000 than in flight it will be around the 6200 max allowed. You have twice as much power than in your 532 so you might want to look if your current prop is good for that...
You'll enjoy the power for sure !
Eager to hear and see your experiance.

  11. Thanks Peter,
I will follow your advice and adjust the prop before the first flight. I’ll try to set it to 6000 RPM static.
Thank you for sharing your experince - this is exactly why I created this blog!
The weather is looking good for tomorrow so I should be able to post first flight feedback tomorrow evening.

  14. Thank you FORUM de ULM-ELA-LSA !
The exhaust system is delivered with the engine and this is important as the tuned exhaust system is the key to the performance. There are a few different models proposed by Simonini depending on the type of installation.

  15. Io ho un Avid Flyer che a punto fisso gira a 6000 giri. Io vado in crociera a 130 km/h con 5200 giri e consumando 12 litri ora.

    1. Hi Jean Mi,
at the moment I only have 63 hours on it. I have not been flying for a long time due to a hared landing and the decision to completely rebuild the 20 year old plane. I know the Victor engines are popular for auto gyros. I hope to be flying again early this summer.
